The UAE has an open economy with a high per capita income and a sizable annual trade surplus. Recent successful efforts at economic diversification have reduced the portion of GDP based on oil and gas output to 25%. In 2013, UAE’s total population was 9.53 million with 85% of the total population is urbanized. CO2 emissions in the same year reached 168 Mt representing 10% of total Middle East emissions. Total primary energy supply in 2013 was 69527 thousand tons of oil equivalent (ktoe), with 98% coming from fossil fuel. Between 2004 and 2030, it is projected that the UAE will need 31 GW of new generating capacity installed.
