About MENA CC

Middle East and North Africa Climate Change (MENA CC)

MENA CC is a research initiative focused to examine and analyze the implications of climate change and energy prospects within the MENA region. Soaring energy demand driven by rapid population growth, increasing urbanization and water desalination, are driving the region to burn growing amounts of its hydrocarbon production to sustain this fast economic development.

Such demand will pose a number of challenges in terms of climate change mitigation in the next 40 years.

In this sense, MENA CC aims to provide detailed sets of projections of the region’s energy future and country by country projection. Such analysis aspire to provide policy-makers and other interested parties with a comprehensive quantitative framework for examining possible future developments in MENA energy supply and their implications for climate change mitigation pathways.

With this research effort, MENA CC seeks to contribute to the enrichments of climate change mitigation potentials in the region alongside with developing more rigorous INDCs (Intended National Determined Contribution) for both country level and regional level. Our hope is to add depth and momentum to the climate change dialogue and improve the understanding of the region’s energy future.
